Notes for Editors on British silver week
The shape of modern silversmithing has changed dramatically in the past fifty years from the post war era when functionality took precedence over design, to the success of the large workshops in the sixties to the designer silversmiths of today. Silver has become both collectable and desirable and takes pride of place in today’s stylish homes.
The finest silversmiths did not keep their skills under wraps. They taught and profoundly influenced art schools and colleges throughout the UK who, in turn, nurtured modern design and creativity together with a high level of craft skills. This tremendous combination has created one of the finest groups of silversmiths in the world.
The recent resurgence of the highest quality modern silverware has come through the passionate support of the Goldsmiths’ Company, which has positively raised awareness in silver design and technological skills.
Today’s designer silversmiths continue to push the boundaries by taking silversmithing to new limits. Traditional making techniques are constantly challenged and developed, while new technologies are adopted to create works which are modern, exciting and vibrant.
